EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
